| | | | Summer
beauty has always focused on deep rich tans, but recent science has linked
sunbathing to lethal cancer. The beauty ideal hasn't changed much--dark
tans are still considered beautiful--but the way to get one has changed.
Instead of baking in the sun for hours, rolling over every once in
a while to keep the tan even, the healthier way is to apply a self-tanning
product.
Many self-tanning products are emerging on the market, so
we've prepared a list of products and brief descriptions of them to help
you choose your tan in a bottle this summer.
Self-Tanning
tips
Exfoliate first. If you want your tan to last longer, clear away all
the dirt and dead skin before you apply a sunless tanner. This ensures
that more product is applied to your body instead of the to the stuff that
will be sloughed off.
Apply self-tanners wearing plastic gloves. You don't want to end up
with a gorgeous bronze tan all over--including your palms and fingernails!
Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after you finish applying
the product even if you wear gloves, to be sure you don't end up with
super-tanned hands.
Spare your joints. Don't apply as much tanner to your joints as to the
rest of your body. The skin around your elbows, knees and ankles is
usually drier, and so the product affects these areas differently than the
rest of your skin. Joints also have more skin (think of the folds of
tissue around your elbows when they're straight) than other areas of your
body. When your joints are straight, you don't want them to look darker
than the rest of you--it is not attractive to appear to have elbow patches
when you're wearing a tank top.

Products
Clinique Self-Sun Body Quick Bronze This product is a
two-phase sunless tanner. First, it bronzes skin. The tinted gel--you see
exactly where your tan will be--is formulated with mica and caramel for an
instant shimmery bronze glow. In 2-3 hours after application, a
combination of Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) -which reacts with amino acids in
the skin without affecting melanin production--and Colour-Moderating Sugar
Technology create a natural-looking sunless tan. This product is oil-free,
allergy tested and fragrance free, but it does not contain sunscreen, and
self-tans do not protect against the sun. ($20.00 for 125 mL)
Quo Faux Glow A bronzing powder ($19.00) and shimmer
powder ($18.00) give skin a healthy tanned look with subtle shimmer.
