    Hammering it home

Time to take stock of your toolbox.

    A well-equipped chest is a do-it-yourselfer's dream come true.

However, having the right tool is essential for getting the job done right, whether you're building a spice rack or tackling that extension before the in-laws arrive.

News is home repair is no longer a guy's game -- women are just as passionate about pliers as their male counterparts.

"Women are not intimidated anymore by changing a light fixture or patching a hole in the wall," says Chuck LeCouter of Rona Home and Garden.

"Most people can do anything as long as they're armed with the right information," adds the How-To coordinator for the Quebec-based chain. Toronto-based homeowner Beverley Ann Robitaille is hammering away in her third dwelling and has done everything from laying ceramic tile to modernizing electrical outlets.

"I didn't know the difference between a Robertson and Phillips screwdriver before I bought my first house," says Robitaille, who now tackles home repair jobs with confidence and ease.

"I have built kitchen cabinets, repaired eavestroughing and drywalled my living room," says the 40-something office clerk.

It's not as tough as you think it is -- just be prepared.
